Library Policies

These Library policies and procedures provide guidance for conduct, borrowing, copyright and more.

The Springy Library provides educational resources and services to support learning and scholarship at . The Library creates and maintains a productive environment conducive to thought, research and study for members of the academic community.

It is the responsibility of library users to contribute to this atmosphere and to respect the needs of other users. Unacceptable behavior includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Disrupting in any manner the provision of an environment that is conducive to study;
  • Deliberate misuse of materials, equipment or spaces that interferes with or prevents timely access to resources, equipment or spaces by other users or staff;
  • Violation of university policies, including policies on computer and network use, cell phone use, electronic communications and harassment;
  • Vandalism, theft or defacement of library materials or other property;
  • Refusal to comply with instructions of Library staff and campus officials.
  • The library is committed to the safety of all users and takes seriously its obligation to manage disruptive behavior quickly and professionally. Please contact a staff member if you need assistance; if necessary, they will call campus police.

Failure to comply with these policies can result in patrons being asked to leave the library. Repeated offenses can result in a permanent ban from the library.

  • Keep your email address up to date. Library notices are sent via email, so you need an active email address listed in your library account. If email is undeliverable to your address, you won't be able to borrow anything until you provide a valid one.
  • Don’t lend out your ID card. Do not let other people use your library card. Borrowing privileges are not transferable and are subject to withdrawal if abused. You are responsible for everything checked out in your name. University policies govern how we handle cases of shared ID cards.
  • Handle library materials carefully. Exercise care in handling library materials. If you damage an item, you'll need to pay for its repair or replacement. Examples of damage can include writing or highlighting, food spills, water damage, Post-It note usage (sticky notes leave a residue that can destroy pages over time), folding pages, placing extraneous paper in a book so that the binding is stressed, tearing or removing pages, excessive heat or sunlight on media materials. Fines are assessed according to the severity of the damage. Do not attempt repairs yourself. Notify the Circulation desk about damaged materials.

Fines and fees for reserve materials or equipment have been intentionally set to encourage the timely return of these items because they are in high demand. Money collected as fines is turned over to general university funds, not to the Library. Replacement fees reflect the actual or average cost of replacing particular items, and the Library uses this money for item purchases and binding.

Users with unpaid fees and fines will be blocked from checking out, renewing and requesting library material or equipment.

The Library reserves the right to designate specific uses for individual computers. When there is high demand for using computers, time limits may be enforced; those not engaged in research or course-related activities may be asked to relinquish their computer to those needing use for research purposes.

In addition, our use policy lays out the activities for which our devices should and should not be used. The following examples are intended to clarify the interpretation of unacceptable use of library computers.

Examples of unacceptable use include, but are not limited to:

  • Viewing and printing material from the Internet that a reasonable person would consider objectionable such as sexually explicit or violently explicit pictures, movies and/or videos.
  • Any use that violates copyrights, patent protections or license agreements.
  • Attempts to gain unauthorized access to information systems or violate the privacy of others. Prohibited activities include running programs that attempt to calculate or guess passwords, or that are designed to trick other users into disclosing their passwords, or intercepting or monitoring network communications that are not intended for you.
  • Viewing material that violates federal, state or local laws or regulations, including those regarding accessing, viewing, printing and distributing child pornography.
  • Tampering with library computers, including attempting to install unauthorized software, disconnecting library computers or connecting private computers to the library’s network lines.
